Prologue:

Brugge bid farewell to Nicky Hayen as head coach two days ago.

Ivan Leko replaces him as head coach of Blauw-Zwart.

Founded as Brugsche FC in 1892, Club Brugge are the second-most decorated side in Belgian football history, behind Anderlecht.

The club savoured a golden era under legendary boss Ernst Happel who won three titles in a row between 1976 and 1978, the 1977 Belgian Cup, and well as being runners-up in the 1976 UEFA Cup final and the 1978 European Cup final, both lost to Liverpool.

Brugge remain the only side from Belgium to reach the top European showcase.

The title wins on the bounce between 2020 and 2022 underlined the first time they’d achieved such dominance since Happel’s time.

Their last title in 2023-24 meant they'd been champions of Belgium six times in the previous nine seasons.

For their part, Arsenal will be aiming to remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament - but are under no illiusions they will face a tough clash at the atmospheric Jan Breydelstadion on the outskirts of this beautifully preserved mediavel town.

Club Brugge v Arsenal team news

Club Brugge

Club Brugge lost at the weeked, dropping to third in the Jupiler Pro League, after Sint-Truidense V.V. came from behind to defeat the 19-time champions of Belgium and close the gap on Royale Union Saint-Gilloise at the top.

Their domestic performance mirrors their Euro problems, with three defeats in their last four matches across all competitions.

The weekend's result saw Brugge part company with Nicky Hayen, with the team also struggling in 26th spot in the Champions League table, ahead of this week's round of fixtures, having posted a single triumph in their five matches so far.

The club's casualty list includes both first-choice goalkeepers, Nordin Jackers and former Liverpool man Simon Mignolet, meaning third drop netminder Dani van den Heuvel continues between the sticks.

Long-term injuries have also ruled out Ludovit Reis, Lynnt Audoor and Zaid Romero.

Jorne Spileers and Mamadou Diakhon are also set to miss the eagerly-awaited tie, while Romeo Vermant is undergoing concussion protocols, as Kyriani Sabbe has a groin problem.

However, the Belgium side should still not be underestimated given the drew 3-3 with La Liga giants last month.

Arsenal

William Saliba did not make the trip to Club Brugge after missing the last few games, whch has seen Arsenal stumbling in the Premier League, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa at the weekend, as well as drawing 1-1 at ten man Chelsea two weekends ago.

"William is still not available," said Arteta in Bruges on Tuesday evening.

Arsenal boss Arteta also provided an update on Declan Rice, and Leandro Trossard - who along with Saliba - did not make the trip to Bruges.

“Declan was ill," Arteta explained, adding: "He was quite sick after the game, and he hasn’t travelled with us.

"And Leo again, he picked another knock in an area where they had the issue and I don't expect that it's going to be long, but unfortunately he cannot be here.

Arsenal have revealed Max Dowman has picked up an injury that will rule the talented teen out for 'weeks' says Arteta

Arsenal boss Arteta also provided an update on Declan Rice, William Saliba and Leandro Trossard

Arsenal boss Arteta on Max Dowman's injury: "It’s part of the journey. At some point when you play at this level, when you play in the position that he plays, the manner that he plays, it was going to happen and it happened.

"OK, it's not ideal, it will be a matter of weeks, it could have been worse. Learn from it and use this time now to continue improving in his education, in everything related to professional football, his habits, the way he needs to develop his physicality, and his understanding of the game.

"Sometimes when you're away from the game, you say, ‘I cannot really live without it, and how important it is.’ So use those moments as well to get a reflection of where you are as well, and if you are better, of course, go forward."
