Prologue

The infernal international break is over with, and Premier League table toppers Arsenal can look forward to the first North London derby of the season, when they host Thonas Frank's Spurs at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon in what promises to be another intense clash for supremacy north of the river.

The omens are good for the Gunners with Spurs having lost seven of their last nine Premier League games, while Arsenal have posted a 14-game unbeaten run at the expense of their bitter north London neighbours, who have only sampled victory once in N5 across the last 33 league meetings in Islington.

While the hard-fought 2-2 draw at Sunderland before the international break may have felt like a defeat after the Black Cats' last-gasp equaliser in the north-east, frustration at the result should be testament to how far the Gunners have come this season, after ending the last three campaigns as Premier League runners-up.

With Bayern Munich to come in the Champions League next week, followed by a tough trip to Chelsea following this weekend's North London derby, boss Mikel Arteta said: "We've done the preparation and we know [a big week] is coming.

"We are ready for that and have everybody healthy, or most of them healthy. Start to generate momentum."

It promises to be another absorbing clash, miss it at your peril.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal's influential centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes will be missing from first team action for a 'number of weeks' after the Brazil defender picked up a thigh injury during the Selecao's 2-0 win over Senegal during the international break, ironically in a friendly played at the Emirates last weekend.

However, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta hinted that a number of his big name injured stars could possibly return for Sunday's eagerly-awaited North London derby

Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli are all in training after the international break, even if the big clash could come too soon for some.

Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus still remain sidelined.

Spurs team news

Cristian Romero, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Bergvall are all being assessed ahead of the match

What the managers say:

Mikel Arteta:

"It's just beautiful especially when we play at home. We know what the team will bring in every single action.

"It's a game that required something else, emotionally. You cannot be too hyped.

"The game demands that in every ball and every action, it needs that little bit more than any other game. On Sunday we need a really good performance."

Thomas Frank

"The interesting thing is that probably both Mikel and I would like a little bit more of a controlled game, but it will probably end up absolutely madhouse.

"Very, very enjoyable to watch for the outside people or fans. I expect a difficult game of course, but a game that can go anywhere."
