“It feels like two lost points” - Renee Slegers reacts to Manchester United stalemate

Arsenal dominated the visitors but failed to find the net, with United down to ten in the second half

Arsenal Women were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United for the second time this season, despite the visitors playing the last 25 minutes with ten players.

The Gunners dominated after surviving an early scare where Anneke Borbe tipped Fridolina Rolfo’s header onto the crossbar, mustering 25 shots on goal.

United full-back Jayde Riviere was sent off for a second yellow card in the 65th minute, but Arsenal were unable to capitalise and remain a point clear of Marc Skinner’s side in third.

“We make it harder for ourselves with this result,” Slegers said of Arsenal’s title hopes, with the Gunners seven points off league leaders Manchester City. “We wanted and needed three points today, so that's two points lost for us, so we made it harder, absolutely.

“There's still games left to play tomorrow, so we'll see what the results are in those games. That's outside of our control, but as long as it's possible, we'll be going more and more, and we'll be chasing and we're looking to climb the table.”

Slegers believed the goalless draw was “one hundred percent” a missed opportunity. “I think the way we dominated the game, apart from the early chance with Rolfo of course, I think all parts of the game were excellent because it's a really good performance.

“[Manchester United] like to be really intense, aggressive in the press. I think we pacified that really well and we took that away from their game. We had to match them in the physicality of the game, the duals, the first, second balls. We did that well as well, especially in midfield and in our centre-backs in the back line. So that was all positive, so there's a lot of positives in the performance.

“Nil-nil away against United, nil-nil today against United, I think there's a lot of progression in the performance today. We have a lot more shots created and a lot more entries into the box but unfortunately, we didn't get the ball in the net today, so it feels like two lost points.”
