Mikel Arteta's Arsenal sealed their fifth victory in six league games over Manchester United, with a gritty 1-0 win at Old Trafford through a first half header from Riccardo Calafiori.
Despite a rusty performance at times from the Gunners, the North Londoners kept out Ruben Amorim's improved side after the Red Devils side had forked out more than £200m on upgrading the side this summer.
Yet with former first choice Andre Onana missing due to a hamstring injury picked up last month, Amorim opted for Altay Bayindir ahead of Tom Heaton for their opening Premier League clash against Arsenal - which proved to be a mistake when the Turkish international flapped at Declan Rice's cross, prior to Calafiori heading home from close range in the 13th minute.
In contrast, Gunners keeper David Raya made a string of superb saves to keep out United, turning away a trio of efforts from debutant Matheus Cunha, while scrambling to his left to prevent a goalbound effort from another new boy, Bryan Mbeumo after the interval.
Rice went close for the Gunners with a late free-kick as Arsenal secured a statement victory on the opening weekend of the season, to start what will hopefully be a momentous campaign with a vital victory.
