When Arsenal and Manchester City go head-to-head, it is never a boring game, and today’s match was no different. The Gunners travelled to Manchester and delivered a thrilling performance as they sealed a 4-3 defeat over the Blues and took home the three points.

Arsenal exploded out of the blocks, with Mariona Caldentey quickly capitalising on defensive mistakes to open the scoring in the first minute. By seven minutes, “Two nil to The Arsenal” was being sung around the stands as childhood Gunner Lotte Wubben-Moy hit a powerful header from Cooney-Cross’ free kick.

However, City were not going to give up the fight easily, and Mary Fowler slotted home Aoba Fujino’s cross making the score 2-1 at halftime.

City’s waves of attack kept coming thick and fast at the start of the second half. Vivianne Miedema punished Arsenal’s sloppy defence, scoring against her former club to give the Cityzens the equaliser.

Arsenal quickly regained the lead through Frida Maanum’s clinical finish, but a controversial penalty conceded by Catley and converted by Fowler from the spot, saw City draw level once more. No one in the stadium could have called a winner at this point in the game as the end-to-end chaos continued.

However, as often happens, Stina Blackstenius had the final say when she slotted home Beth Mead’s perfect cross to secure the crucial win for Renée Slegers’ side, boosting them on the campaign for a top-three finish. However, for City, now in fourth place, the search for points continues.

The two sides will face each other again on Thursday 6th Feb at 7pm in the Subway Women’s League Cup semi-final.
