Arsenal's Mohamed Elneny on verge of a potential exit amid interest from Turkey

Mohamed Elneny links up with Egypt squad ahead of ACN as suitors bid to sign Arsenal midfielder in January window

Arsenal's Mohamed Elneny is on the verge of departing north London as transfer interest growns in the Egypt midfielder.

While Elneny will be heading to his fourth Africa Cup of Nations after he was named in Egypt’s 27-man squad for the tournament this month, the 31-year-old is attracting interest from various clubs including suitors from Turkey.

The midfielder has joined up with his national squad travelling to the Ivory Coast for the competition, seeking to win it for the first time having reached the final twice in 2017 and 2021.

However, a number of Turkish teams have already submitted offers for the midfielder.

The Egyptian is the subject of offers from Turkish sides Trabzonspor and Besiktas as the Gunners consider offers for fringe players - with Elneny a target despite a solitary appearance in the Premier League for the Gunners this term.

Back in February, Elneny vowed to 'give everything' to help Arsenal achieve their potential after signing a one-year contract extension with the club.

At the time, he said: "I'm so happy, I love this club and our supporters so much and I'll give everything to help us be the best we can be, every day I'm here.

"It makes me so proud to have represented this amazing club since 2016. The spirit and togetherness we have in our squad right now is so positive and I'm so happy I have extended my contract."

However, Elneny previously spent the 2019-20 season on loan in Turkey with Besiktas, where he made 36 appearances during the campaign - and is wanted again in the country.

Since joining the club from Swiss side FC Basel in 2015, Elneny has made 159 appearances for the Gunners, scoring six times - with Elneny aiming to land silverware with his national side this month.

Egypt are the most successful team in the competition’s 66-year history, lifting the trophy on seven occasions, and they start their quest to make it eight when they take on Mozambique in Abidjan on Sunday, January 14.

Their second group game comes four days later when they face Ghana - who will be without Thomas Partey after injury ruled him out of the tournament - and will continue his recovery from his thigh injury in London.

Elneny will then hope to be in action against Cape Verde as Egypt complete the group stage on Monday, January 22.

Before then, they will warm up for the competition with a friendly against Tanzania on Sunday, January 7 in Cairo.

Mo is the most experienced member of the squad with 93 caps to his name across 12 years of service to the national team. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is the only other Premier League player named in the Pharoahs’ selection, who will captain the team.

The competition kicks off on January 13 and will run until February 11.
