Arsenal endure Europa League penalty heartbreak as Lisbon win at the Emirates

Player Ratings: Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (aet, 3-3 agg) Lisbon win 5-3 on penalties

Arsenal were agonisingly knocked out of the Europa League at the last-16 stage in a last-gasp penalty shootout defeat by Sporting Lisbon at Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel Martinelli's spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Adan before Nuno Santos netted the winner to prompt deep joy among Sporting's players after an enthralling tie.

An absolutely outstanding long-range chip by Pedro Goncalves from 46 yards forced extra time after Arsenal's Granit Xhaka had earlier swept home after pouncing on Martinelli's rebound for the opener.

Find out who impressed with our Gooner Fanzine Player Ratings

GK: Aaron Ramsdale - 5/10 - Jons David Seaman in being lobbed from the halfway line as Pedro Goncalves joins Nayim and Ronaldinho in the hall of infamy

RB: Takehiro Tomiyasu - N/A - Injury forced him off after just nine minutes after he looked to have overstretched

CB: William Saliba - N/A - Didn't last too much longer than Tomiyasu. Looked to have a back complaint similar to the issue he had early in the season

CB: Gabriel - 6/10 - Tough on the solid defender

LB: Oleksandr Zinchenko - 6/10 - Involved throughout but not his most influential game

CM: Fabio Vieira - 5/10 - Shone in the first half but faded somewhat after that. So much more to come from the former Porto player who can play an important role in the title run-in

CM: Jorginho - 5/10 - Unable to impose his will on proceedigns despite excellent technical ability

CM: Granit Xhaka - 7/10 - A joyful celebration to a joyful goal. But that seems so long ago now

RW: Reiss Nelson - 6/10 - Mostly anonymous unfortunately but will be an important player come Sunday .

ST: Gabriel Jesus - 7/10 - Great to have Jesus return. Once he starts scoring again the world will seem a better place

LW: Gabriel Martinelli - 5/10 - Gave his all and can't be blamed for missing his penalty as Arsenal win as a team and lose as a team. A class act

SUB: Ben White (9' for Tomiyasu) - 7/10

SUB: Rob Holding (21' for Saliba) - 6.5/10

SUB: Leandro Trossard (46' for Jesus) - 6/10

SUB: Thomas Partey (66' for Jorginho) - 6.5/10

SUB: Bukayo Saka (66' for Nelson) - 7.5/10

SUB: Martin Odegaard (101' for Vieira) - 7.5/10
