Valiant effort from Arsenal's U19s ten Young Guns after captain Louie Copley was handed an early red card - find out who impressed with our Player Ratings from Meadow Park

Ten-man Arsenal fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Olympiacos on Wednesday afternoon.

The Gunners saw their skipper, Louie Copley sent off in the opening 15 minutes for a challenge just outside the centre circle.

Arsenal struggled to create many chances with the numerical disadvantage as Olympiakos took full control. Ethan Cortes gave the visitors the lead on 21 minutes after latching onto a poor back pass from Brayden Clarke as he clipped the ball past Jack Porter.

On 37 minutes Olympiacos doubled their lead as a poor punch out to the edge of the area from Porter found it’s way to Christos Filis who drilled home in clinical fashion.

After the break Olympiacos continued to keep Arsenal at arm’s length.

The ten men huffed and puffed but for the majority of the second period it was the visitors who looked the most likely to get the next goal and they would have done if it wasn’t for a couple of majestic saves from Porter. But with less than ten minutes to go Arsenal halved the deficit as Brando Bailey-Joseph found Josh Ogunnaike who drilled home to give Arsenal hope.

Ogunnaike very nearly found an equaliser as the clock reached 90’ but Anastasios Kampagiovanis denied him with a smart save.

Overall, it was a disappointing result again in the UEFA Youth League for Arsenal, but the lads can be proud of the way they fought for each other with the numerical disadvantage for 75 minutes.

A bit harsh on the ratings I thought, Nick. Marli Salmon was very good throughout and just got better the longer the game went on. Brando Bailey-Joseph gave his full back so many problems he had to be helped out by the left midfielder and Harriman- Annous didn’t stop working and trying. This was a young team playing what looked like a much older and physically bigger side. The referee was very poor, refusing to book Olympiakos players for repeated fouling and some frankly outrageous diving. The red was probably a yellow. At one point I wondered whether the referee was auditioning to be one of Webb’s happy band, so utterly clueless was he.
