Player Ratings as Arsenal lose 2-1 at Aston Villa
Buendia's late winner denies Arsenal a point at Villa Park
Emi Buendia scored with the last kick of the game as Aston Villa stunned Arsenal to move three points behind the Premier League leaders.
Leo Trossard's sixth goal of the campaing looked to have sealed a hard-earned point for Arsenal after the Gunners Belgian attacker cancelled out Matty Cash's opener.
Find out who impressed with our Player Ratings
David Raya: 7/10 - produced a great save to keep it at 0-0 on nine mins from Ollie Watkins, undone at the far post on 36 minutes as Eze is caught napping, or was the Villa scorer callaferrari’s man? Either way it’s 1-0 Villa, with disaster at the end as Villa nick an undeserved winner in injury time.
Ben White: 6.5/10 - aggravator in chief, linked well as he normally does with Saka, his increased bite in the tackle is most welcome and needed in games like this when we go to these away grounds, disaster strikes in injury time as villa nick the winner, and the Arteta out brigade find their voices once again no doubt (mugs)
Piero Hincapie: 6.5/10 - a taste of English football at the away grounds today, quite the baptism as Villa looked potent going forwards, held it together at the back in the second half, until we couldn’t.
Jurrien Timber: 7/10 - hard as nails in the challenge as Arsenal impose themselves in the first half, continued in the same vein in the second half as Arsenal maintain huge periods of possession, while looking for the winner, sadly not to be today, as Buendia's late strike breaks our hearts
Riccardo Calaferrari: 7/10 - looking splendid in the third kit, look at him, with his gladiatorial demeanour, his flowing locks, only thing missing is an abundance of grapes and wine to scoff, disruptor in chief, es tu brutus, Ave it, probably at fault for Villa’s opener, he is right back after all (I think) but Eze will be the escaped goat who takes the fall for him.
Martin Odegaard: 7/10 - free flowing, end-to-end midfield battle here today, pulling all the strings, finding the spaces behind others are unable too, his ability to thread a ball behind the lines is different gravy entirely to any other player we have, our best player today and great to have him back and working his way back to his best form. Such a shame about the ending
Martin Zubimendi: 7/10 - instrumental in covering the back four, three if I can get a grasp on where Ricky is playing today. If only he could play a five yard slide rule pass as good as Phil Foden he would be the complete player.
Declan Rice: 7.5/10 - takes one in the kidneys on 28 minutes to deny villa a breakaway goal, man like horse might be in need of a sugar cube or two, blazes over the bar with a half chance on 67 minutes, he’s going to need to be rotated at some point, not sure when though, will leave that to Arteta.
Bukayo Saka: 7/10 - plenty of the ball early on, looking very dangerous as Arsenal’s press causes villa problems, booked on 74 mins as he chased back after losing possession, replaced by Madueke on 78 minutes, I thought he looked sharp today, got nothing for his efforts though.
Mikel Merino: 5.5/10 - industrious, tactically aware enough to drop deep when required, not enough to get pulled off at half time though. Slightly underwhelming.
Ebere Eze: 5/10 - loose with possession, looked like he has ice cubes in for studs - alas my rating is generous for our maverick today, keep calm Arsenal fans, worse things happen at sea and at Spurs.
Substitutes:
Viktor Gyokeres: 5/10 - sent on for the second half, looks like he could do with wearing a pair of jeans today, it definitely looks a bit parky up there and I’m happy to be watching from comfort of my armchair, he is gonna have to find a way somehow to deliver more, otherwise he could find himself playing or being sent to Coventry again.
Leo Trossard: 7.5/10 - sent on to salvage the situation, inches wide on 49 minutes with a crisp buddy holly. Six minutes he delivers at the far post after great work from Odegaard and Saka, the halftime rocket has done its job from the Gaffer here. Presumably saved and carrying an injury as he is subbed back off late in the game, his work is done, the silver squirrel nicks Villa’s chestnuts as we take the draw…..oh b*gger, it’s 2-1 Villa….nooooooo !!!
Noni Madueke: 5/10 - on for Saka with 10 minutes left to deliver the goods. This was a battleground today, Villa gave us nothing cheaply, despite most of the possesion we can’t find the winner we so desperately need.
Gabi Martinelli: 5/10 - sent on with minutes remaining as Arsenal throw the kitchen sink at getting three points here today, barring a late miracle here, oh no, no no no, it’s 2-1 villa in injury time.
Myles Lewis Skelly: 5/10 - on with five minutes remaining, all these minutes he is getting he is going to need a rest soon, give this man an England cap.
View From The Armchair Villa Verdict:
'We woz robbed' is the headline from this armchair viewing part time pundit, my heart goes out to the travelling faithful, you didn’t deserve that finish there.
Crowd watch:
I’m gonna skip the usual crowd watch for those in the ground today, and put out a call to all Arsenal fans around the world, can we please, if you are reading this, stick together, through thick and thin.
Can we please not pile in on Eze, he had a bad day at the office, it happens, it’s football, he had a good one the other week against Spurs did he not?
We enjoyed huge swathes of possession here today, the players clearly gave it their all today, despite ex Arsenal target Buendia who somehow finds a way through for their 95th minute winner to break Arsenal hearts.
This is the time to remain a supporter, first and foremost, find the strength to give your head a wobble. And remain behind the boys.
We move, we go again, COYG
