Arsenal Women netted twice in the second half to overcome a stubborn Liverpool side and continue their winning start to 2024.

After a turgid first half, Vivienne Miedema scored a stunning long-range goal to give Arsenal the lead on the hour mark. Caitlin Foord doubled Arsenal’s lead from Alessia Russo’s low cross.

Player ratings:

Manu Zinsberger 7/10

Didn’t face a shot on target until injury time, when she made a strong save with her legs to deny Mia Enderby.

Katie McCabe 6/10

Covered plenty of ground in what was one of her more quiet games. Booked for taking too long to come off for Steph Catley.

Lotte Wubben-Moy 7.5/10

Steady whenever she was called into action, dealing well with the pacy Shanice van de Sanden. Missed a couple of decent headed chances.

Amanda Ilestedt 7/10

Will see her spot at centre-back come under pressure with the return of Leah Williamson. Played a role in Arsenal’s clean sheet.

Emily Fox 9/10

Underlapped Mead in attack, with the pair quickly building an effective partnership on the right. Physical in defence and has wasted no time adapting to English football. Assisted Miedema’s goal by passing the ball inside and was involved in Arsenal’s second.

Lia Walti 6.5/10

Scored in Arsenal’s last trip to Liverpool. Silky footwork in midfield but at times the final pass.

Victoria Pelova 6/10

Moved the ball quickly for the Gunners in what wasn’t her most polished display. She’s certainly set herself a high bar though with a very strong season.

Caitlin Foord 7.5/10

Denied expertly by Laws when she had the chance to put Arsenal 2-0 up, before timing her run well to meet Russo’s pass and find the net.

Vivianne Miedema 8.5/10

Caused problems in between the lines as Liverpool struggled to pick her runs up, looking impressive for the Gunners. Produced a stunning goal to put Arsenal in front on the hour mark, beating Laws from 25 yards out with a rocket, her first goal after returning from an ACL injury.

Beth Mead 7/10

Frustrated with Arsenal’s lack of pace putting attacks together. Often involved in the penalty area but couldn’t provide the final touch Arsenal needed.

Alessia Russo 7/10

Had an early chance which was saved by Laws, before service dried up. Assisted Foord’s goal with an excellent run forward and low cross.

Kim Little (Sub, 71’) 7/10

Bolstered Arsenal’s midfield from the bench.

Steph Catley (Sub, 71’) 6.5/10

Replaced McCabe at left-back.

Stina Blackstenius (Sub, 71’) 7/10

Hit a hat-trick against Reading in midweek. Got in behind the Liverpool defence with ease and had plenty of chances to find the net, which she couldn’t convert.

Cloe Lacasse (Sub, 86’)

Frida Maanum (Sub, 86’)

Subs not used: Sabrina D'Angelo, Leah Williamson, Laia Codina, Kyra Cooney-Cross.
