Player Ratings: Olivia Smith sent off as Arsenal Women lose Subway Cup semi-final

Elisabeth Terland’s goal condemned the Gunners to a 1-0 League Cup defeat at Meadow Park

Arsenal Women were beaten in the League Cup semi-finals for a second consecutive season as the Gunners lost 1-0 to Manchester United.

Elisabeth Terland capitalised on goalkeeper Anneke Borbe’s misplaced pass in first half stoppage time to score the decisive goal, before Olivia Smith was sent off for the home side in the 62nd minute for a second yellow card.

Player ratings:

Anneke Borbe 4/10

Her misplaced pass put the ball on a plate for Elisabeth Terland to open the scoring in first half stoppage time- a rare but costly error to end her run of clean sheets.

Katie McCabe 6/10

An intriguing battle with United’s latest Scandinavian signing, Ellen Wangerheim. Fortunate to not concede a penalty for a coming together with Terland in the first half.

Laia Codina 5.5/10

Handed a rare start by Renee Slegers and looked a touch rusty to start but made some crucial tackles, including an important intervention on Wangerheim in the first half. Threw herself upfront (with Renee Slegers’ permission) in injury time.

Lotte Wubben-Moy 6/10

Wore the captain’s armband and played out from the back effectively, looking to mix up her passing range.

Taylor Hinds 5/10

Replaced Emily Fox at right-back but perhaps Smilla Holmberg’s runs and crosses would have been a better option.

Victoria Pelova 5/10

A big opportunity to impress, replacing Kim Little in midfield, with some bright moments.

Mariona Caldentey 5.5/10

The more advanced of Arsenal’s two ‘sixes’ and was marked very tightly throughout.

Caitlin Foord 5.5/10

Some bright flashes on the left wing but Arsenal need more from their winger in front of goal- the Australian forward only has one goal to her name in all competitions.

Frida Maanum 5/10

Could or should have had a brace of early goals to her name but couldn’t convert either chance in front of the North Bank. Very often in the right place, too often the wrong execution.

Olivia Smith 4.5/10

Her first booking was harsh, her second reckless, and Arsenal’s best player was dismissed midway with 28 minutes remaining. She had been electric on the right wing, driving into the box and beating defenders with ease.

Alessia Russo 5.5/10

As was the case at the Emirates earlier this month, the former United striker was watched very closely by Dominique Janssen. Withdrawn late on for Beth Mead.

Stina Blackstenius (Sub, 58’) 5.5/10

Led the line with Russo and Foord out wide after Smith was sent off.

Kim Little (Sub, 75’)

Smilla Holmberg (Sub, 75’)

Beth Mead (Sub, ’) /10

Subs not used: Daphne van Domselaar, Amy Liddiard, Steph Catley, Sophie Harwood.
