A thrilling end to end, goal heavy match, full of strong matchups saw Arsenal come away with a 4-3 win. The Gunners’ early 2-0 lead was equalised and they had to fight until the end to get back on top and stay there. Strikes from Frida Maanum and Stina Blackstenius made it four and City couldn’t manage to find an equaliser.

Player ratings:

Daphne van Domselaar

Some great saves to deny some powerful City strikes in this high scoring game. Commanding presence at the back.

6/10

Emily Fox

Impressive speed up the right hand side, challenging the Blues with her runs. Strong defence in the box when it mattered.

7/10

Lotte Wubben-Moy

First start under Renée Slegers sees a powerful header take Arsenal 2-0 up and her first goal of the season.

7/10

Leah Williamson

Calm on the ball, looked around for options and used her high football IQ to switch the ball well or pick out long passes, good positioning mostly. Rating would be higher if they hadn’t conceded 3.

7.5/10

Steph Catley

Good work rate at the back against City’s waves of attack. Unfortunate to concede a penalty, however contact look like it was outside the box.

6/10

Mariona Caldentey

Great steal from City’s defence to score in the game’s opening minute. Influential in the middle in the last half an hour.

7/10

Beth Mead

More presence on the pitch in the second half with some good movement on the wing, excellent cross to assist Arsenal’s 4th goal. Improved as the game went on.

7/10

Frida Maanum

Struggled to get into the game in the first half, but a good run and a confident strike saw her score Arsenal’s 3rd goal.

7/10

Alessia Russo

Great speed when escaping City’s defence, played with determination. Not many chances at goal but played well alongside Blackstenius and Maanum.

6.5/10

Stina Blackstenius

Threatening runs forward, and great strong press. Caught offside a few times where it wasn’t necessary to be in those areas. Loves to score at the Joie Stadium and so of course she did!

7/10

Kyra Cooney-Cross

Strong turns and skilled footwork in the middle, feels trustworthy with the ball, subbed off in the second half.

7/10

Lia Wälti (Sub, 68 ’)

Great diagonal balls and solid in the middle, good in transition. Hugely impactful for Arsenal from her first touch.

8.5/10

Rosa Kafaji (Sub, 88’)

Amanda Ilestedt (Sub, 94’)

Subs not used:

Manuela Zinsberger, Naomi Williams, Laia Codina, Jenna Nighswonger, Katie Reid, Niamh Peacock
