Renée Slegers says squad can lean on last season's success when things get tough

Renée Slegers addressed the media ahead of this weekend's North London derby, here's what she had to say.

Renée Slegers says her Arsenal squad can use past success under pressure to perform after a run of tough results.

The Gunners are heading into a must-win away North London derby this weekend against a strengthened Tottenham Hotspur side and three points seems like the only option.

Last season Arsenal showed their prowess under pressure across multiple back-against-the-wall fixtures and Slegers spoke to The Gooner Fanzine about how the squad can lean on past experiences under pressure.

She said: “That’s in the squad and in the individuals as well. They’ve done this and they’ve shown so much resilience and strength.

“They know what they can do, what they can achieve so that’s definitely within our foundation and in our pillars that we have that belief.

“When things become harder, or it’s not as successful as you want, you have that in the back of your head, knowing we can do it.”

Slegers also spoke about team news ahead of this weekend’s trip to Brisbane Road, citing that everyone made it through Wednesday’s match against Bayern Munich.

Leah Williamson and Kim Little remain sidelined through their respective injuries and Slegers commented on Williamson’s progress and importance to the side.

She said: “She’s been more and more involved with the team and team training which is really positive.

“She feels good but has a couple of steps to take still, we expect maybe somewhere in December, sometime in the next block we might see her again.

“Leah is a player with so much quality, the way she finds passes is so good. We’ve missed her as a leader as well.

“She brings a lot of composure and solutions to the team.”

When asked about the magnitude of the North London derby, Slegers confirmed she and the squad are looking forward to the occasion.

She said: “They’re always big. They’re big for us, they’re big for the players and they’re big for the fans as well.

“It’s an important one for us and for the fans, and we know they will show up, and we’re so grateful they’re with us and supporting us through all times.

“We’re going to do our very, very best.”

Arsenal will travel to Brisbane Road to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, kick off is at 2:30pm.
