Renee Slegers has said Arsenal will need to manage Everton’s threat on transitions during Saturday’s Women’s Super League clash at Goodison Park.
The home side beat Chelsea 1-0 away from home last time out thanks to Honoka Hayashi’s strike, and a stoic defensive effort, for their second league win of the season.
A sold-out away end of over 1,200 fans will cheer on the Gunners on Saturday lunchtime at Everton Women’s new Goodison home as of this season.
“I highly respect Everton and Brian [Sorensen] for the team they are,” said Slegers. “They're a very unpredictable team, they can do different things, so it's always at the start of the game having a good look at what their plan is and what their structure is and what they try to do.
“They have been extremely clinical from their transitions, so we have to manage that really well because we know the strength they have with the quality of players that can set it up and the quality of players that can finish it. They have quality and speed up top, so we'll have to manage that really well, it's one of their big weapons.
“If you look at the way they defended their last game where they got the 1-0 win, they defended for their lives in the box and their goalkeeper saves a lot of shots and moments, so we expect the same.
“I can imagine they take a lot of belief out of their performance and so we expect a hard game against Everton. I think if you look at the Twente game we might be asked similar questions, there will be similar challenges, but I think the physicality, the tempo will go up.”
Defenders Jenna Nighswonger and Laia Codina both missed Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over FC Twente. “They're been managing minor issues,” said Slegers. “I think Codi is a little bit further ahead, there's one more session to go, she might be able to travel, so we'll see how she goes tomorrow. Jenna, I don't think will travel.”
