Despite some shaky defensive moments, Arsenal enjoyed a big win in South London on a night where we paid tribute to our former player – George Eastham.

Here are three things that stood out for me, writes Ian Mills

Jesus rises further still –

After his midweek hat-trick, the clever money was on our Brazilian forward keeping his place attack ahead of Kai Havertz, as it turned out both players made the starting eleven albeit Jesus kept his No9 position and rewarded Arteta’s faith with another masterful display.

He scored with first shot after six minutes, and whilst that was well taken, it was his finish for his second that really showed how much his confidence has grown.

After Partey’s clever layoff, he arrowed the ball into the top corner as we re-took the lead after Sarr’s equaliser. He then came within inches of a second consecutive hat-trick as his fine header hit the post before being tucked home by Havertz.

In truth, he should have completed his personal treble after the break however the last week has shown what he can still contribute to our side, he now needs to continue to do so on a regular basis.

Saka injury concern –

When Bukayo pulled up in the 24th minute holding his hamstring, all collective Gooners held their breath.

It was clear he would not be able to continue and pictures of him leaving Selhurst Park on crutches will have done little to allay fears that he is set for a lengthy spell on the treatment table.

The worry remains that he is overplayed by Arteta with his form, importance to the side and his regular availability all seemingly leaving him as a player who barely gets a rest throughout the season.

He one of Arsenal’s and England’s most trusted Lieutenants and this absence will again hear cries for another right sided attacking player to be signed to give competition as well as the ability to rest Saka.

With further medical tests due at the time of writing it is not yet certain how long he will be out. Martinelli filled in well there during this game and both Jesus and Nwaneri are other options for the right-hand side.

However, with Raheem Sterling also injured, a new attacking signing must remain high on the club’s ‘To Do’ list this January.

London is Red –

This result ensured that we completed a complete calendar year unbeaten in London derbies.

We have played ten times against fellow opposition from the capital winning eight and drawing the other two during 2024.

We have now also played all but one of our London derbies away from home this season already winning three and drawing draw with Brentford to come on New Years Day.

It is often said it is more difficult to win the League title as a London club by nature of the number of derbies so to take 11 points from a possible 15 so this campaign is solid foundation upon which to build.
