Three Things We Learned from Arsenal's Champions League win at Slavia Prague as Sunderland loom
A night of records as we made it four wins for four in the Champions League.
Here's Ian Mills on three things we noticed from Arsenal's trip to Prague
1 - Magic Mikel:
– when our Spanish midfielder was put upfront in our away game at Leicester in February it was thought of something as a ‘Hail Mary’ however he scored twice in a 2-0 win and ever since he has become something of a threat in attack.
Tuesday evening's effrots mean he has now scored 12 goals for the club in 59 appearances.
His first goal was a well taken volley from Leandro Trossard’s fine cross then he profited from poor goalkeeping as he beat Stanek in the Slavia goal to head home.
Given the myriad of injuries we currently have in attack, we will need him to play as a striker again at Sunderland this weekend.
He will surely head to the North East full of confidence.
2 - Record breakers:
– It was an evening of firsts for Arsenal as Max Dowman became the youngest ever Champions League player at just 15 years and 308 days.
Bukayo Saka became the first player in the club’s history to score in four consecutive Champions League away games when he calmly dispatched his well taken penalty.
Our eighth consecutive clean sheet ensured that we equalled our record from 1903.
The previous record was set across both the 1902-03 and 1903-04 seasons, so this is the longest consecutive run of clean sheets in a single campaign ever.
We also achieved a fourth straight Champions League win without conceding a goal, again for the first time.
2 - Keeping momentum:
– I doubt even the most optimistic Gooner could have predicted that after 16 games played our record would read won 14, drawn 1 lost 1. Goals scored 33 Goals conceded 3. Clean sheets 12.
We are six points clear at the top of the Premier League, in second place in the Champions League and into the Carabao quarter finals.
We have built a squad that is proving capable of dealing with numerous absences and is driven by a determination to go one better than the near misses of the past three seasons.
Sunderland will be a stern test on Saturday - but this squad go there with real momentum and a will to make this a season to long be remembered.
