Three Things We Learned from thrashing Spurs as Champions League blockbuster clash with Bayern Munich looms
As Eze as 1,2,3: North London is red as Arsenal claim an emphatic derby day victory ahead of Bayern Munich at the Emirates
As Arsenal gear up to face Bayern Munich here's Ian Mills with his take on a glorious victory
1- Let It All Work Out:
– the emotion of what Eberechi Eze had achieved was writ large across his face as he completed his hat trick.
In so doing he became only the fourth player in history to register a personal treble in a North London Derby and the first Arsenal player since Alan Sunderland in 1978.
He almost created the first goal within the opening five minutes when his clever lofted pass found Declan Rice however Vicario saved smartly. The same two players combined on 41 minutes although this time it was Rice who provided the pass to Eze who took it on and found his was past two Spurs players before whipping the ball beyond Vicario’s despairing dive.
His second goal arrived just 36 seconds into the second half as he curled a really well taken effort into the far corner of the net, on his ‘wrong’ foot to effectively settle this derby.
Richarlison’s goal had made things a little nervy, however once Leandro Trossard did well to find Eze on the edge of the box he again displayed his wonderful calmness in front of goal as this time he found the net with a near post finish.
The boyhood Gooner who left the club in tears at 13 has returned a man, and is now a huge hero with a never to be forgotten display as he ensured Thomas Frank and his sorry team from the wrong end of the Seven Sisters Road will not be asking ‘who is Eze?’ again in a hurry.
His choice of Arsenal over Spurs in the transfer window looks completely vindicated and they look like a match made in heaven.
2 - Trossard Again Ole Ole:
– our little Belgian magician continues to enjoy an excellent run of form and scored his fifth goal of the season and added his fifth assist.
He latched onto Mikel Merino’s tremendous throughball, reached the penalty area, turned and slid home the opening goal. Trossard had scored the winning goal in this fixture last season too and he revelled in the post goal celebrations.
His fine pass set up Eze for his hat trick goal. There was so much talk of whether Leo should get the rumoured pay rise and if he should even be kept on at the club this summer yet his original January 2023 signing and the decision to keep him this summer too have both proved extremely acute pieces of business and he will have a huge role to play in our quest for glory on all four fronts.
3 - Extending Our Lead Whilst Rivals Falter:
– how many times in recent seasons when our title rivals have slipped up, we have failed to take advantage.
I was out with my wife on Saturday and was not keeping uptodate with the scores so was somewhat shocked (though pleased of course) to see Liverpool’s latest debacle.
I hoped rather than expected Newcastle to add to the feelgood factor in the late kick off however once they did, what was always going to be a big game for the Gunners just cranked up several notches.
Chelsea’s win had reduced our lead to three points however we went about our job in a professional, passionate and clinical matter to put clear daylight again between ourselves and the chasing pack.
This was the first of three huge games in a week, and we will go into the Bayern game on Wednesday full of confidence.
