Three Things We Learned This Week As Arsenal Gear Up For Trip To Rock-Bottom Wolves
We continue to fight on four fronts with all eyes turning to Molineux tonight.
Arsenal can move seven points clear of Manchester City with a victory at rock-bottom Wolves, albeit having played a game more.
One thing is certain, however, nothing more than a win will do for Mikel Arteta's Premier League leaders.
Here's Ian Mills with his reflections this week after the Gunners claimed a place in the FA Cup fifth round - and a trip to Mansfield Town next month - with a Sunday afternoon stroll against Wigan Athletic.
1 - Christian is Nor-gold:
– The former Brentford Captain was given a rare start in this game and was superb throughout earning the man of the match award.
It was his clever pass that set up Gabriel Jesus to add our fourth goal. He is the epitome of the consummate professional, encouraging from the sidelines as more often than not he has had a watching brief so far.
He never complains and has spoken highly of how proud he is to be able to represent Arsenal. With midfield injuries beginning to mount and games continuing to come at a pace, it is to be hoped that the Danish international has a large part to play at the business end of the season. Jesus’ goal was his 22nd in domestic cup competitions, only Marcus Rashford has scored more since Jesus’ debut.
2 - Gabi makes Cup history:
– Gabi Martinelli is continuing to make his goalscoring mark everywhere except for the Premier League where he has just one goal so far.
In stark contrast, his well taken effort here was his tenth strike in domestic and European knockout competitions and he has become the first Gunners player for 31 years to achieve this following the legendary Ian Wright in 1994-95.
He has look assured in front of goal in the cup competitions yet does not appear to be able to transfer this form to the bread and butter of the league.
Ironically, his sole strike was a crucial one as it clinched a vital point at home to Manchester City in September.
3 - Debut delights:
– Marli Salmon made his home bow when he replaced William Saliba whilst Tommy Setford was also given a taste of FA Cup first team action to go with his League Cup appearance at Preston last season - he came on late in the second half in place of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
In more good news for the club, we became the first Premier League side to score four goals within half an hour of an F A Cup tie.
Following his clever headed goal at Brentford, Noni Madueke was on the scoresheet again to register his sixth goal for the club and he is starting to deliver an end product which is much required from our wide players.
The fifth round draw away to Mansfield is not to be taken lightly however it should allow for further large rotation of the squad. In the meantime here's to three points on the road at Molineux this evening.
