Two controversial disallowed goals as Arsenal Women draw with Chelsea

Alessia Russo equalised for the Gunners after Alyssa Thompson's early goal

Arsenal Women had two goals controversially disallowed in an action-packed 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Alyssa Thompson gave Chelsea the lead inside nine minutes when her deft finish lobbed Daphne van Domselaar and found the far corner.

The Arsenal goalkeeper tipped Catarina Macario’s powerful strike onto the crossbar as the Gunners survived an early spell of pressure against the league leaders.

Blackstenius fired home from Beth Mead’s corner in the 53rd minute to spark wild celebrations at the Emirates, but the goal was controversially disallowed for handball.

The Gunners equalised three minutes from time when Alessia Russo, who may have been offside, met substitute Frida Maanum’s cross and Hampton could not keep the ball out despite getting a touch.

Controversy continued into injury time when Maanum raced in behind and finished past Hampton, but the offside flag was raised. Again, it looked tight, and VAR may have had a different say.

The points were shared in front of over 56,000 fans at a raptuous Emirates.
