Prologue
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal posted an impressive 3-1 victory over Inter Milan at the San Siro to ensure the north Londoners qualify as one of the top two sides out of the 36 team league, ensuring that they will have home advantage in the second leg of each knockout round all the way to the final.
What was notable about the Gunners excellent win at the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza in midweek was the fact that Christian Chivu's side attacked their visitors, rather than simply sat back and offered a low block, as Sean Dyche's obdurate Nottingham Forest did last weekend, much to the froth and fury of Arsenal's hysterical online audience.
Michael Carrick's Manchester United side will surely aim to also fight fire with fire, and attempt to play football against the Gunners, to do otherwise would be to betray the club's identity, albeit one that has taken a severe buffeting since Alex Ferguson retired back in 2013.
Ironically Arteta is one of three managers Carrick faced in his previous caretaker spell with the Reds five years ago.
That Premier League meeting at Old Trafford back in December 2021 saw Carrick emerge victorious with a 3-2 victory, powered by a Cristiano Ronaldo brace and goal from Bruno Fernandes cancelling efforts from Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard.
Fast foward five seasons and Carrick's first game back against City last weekend also brought victory for United, with the garlanded former player aining to continue the run in north London this weekend.
Arsenal vs Manchester United team news
Arsenal
The Gunners have received a boost after defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie returned to training ahead of the weekend's eagerly-awaited clash. Both had been expected to be ruled out due to injury.
"We still have another training session, so we will see tomorrow after that,” Mikel Arteta said, when asked about Calafiori and Hincapie. "After Inter, we have no issues."
Talented teen Max Dowman is still missing, while fellow teenager Ethan Nwaneri has joined Marseille on loan for the rest of the season.
Manchester United
Noussair Mazraoui has returned to Manchester after narrowly losing to Senegal in the Africa Cup of Nations final with Morocco.
Academy graduate Shea Lacey is available for this one, after serving his one-match suspension for seeing red after picking up two yellow cards in the FA Cup defeat at the hands of Brighton at Old Trafford on the same afternoon the Gunners beat Portsmouth 4-1 on the south coast.
Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt missed the victory over Manchester City in the derby last weekend, and still remain doubts.
What the managers say
Mikel Arteta
on how different United will be now Carrick is in charge:
We don't know. Every game is different. At the end, the individuals are the ones that make the difference or the ones that make the game in a certain way and we're going to try to be ourselves, be very dominant like we always want to be, impose the game that we want to play and regardless of what they want to do, we want to take the game in the areas that are very good for us.
Michael Carrick
We're looking forward to a real challenge, one for us we're going down to face head on.
