Prologue

Football has a habit of coming at you fast, especially at this time of year.

Mikel Arteta's Premier League table toppers have a chance to avenge their agonising last-gasp defeat at the hands of Aston Villa a mere three weeks ago, when Emi Buendia's 95th minute winner saw the Gunners go down to a 2-1 defeat.

Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery has led the Villians to an impressive 11 wins on the bounce in the league, picking 36 of the last 39 points available.

It is a run which has seen the Villa Park outfit rise to third in the table. Prior to embarking on such an eye-catching streak, the side from the West Midlands sat 11th after 10 matches.

The Gunners lost home and away to Aston Villa during the 2023-24 season, in a campaign that saw them finish a mere two points behind a relentless City side that pipped the North Londoners to the title in an agonising climax. The 2-0 defeat by Emery's side in April 24 arguably cost the Gunners the title.

Arteta will be aiming to quell the burgeoning title challenge of Villa at the Emirates on Tuesday evening.

It promises to be a blockbuster clash.

Since losing 2-1 at Aston Villa on Saturday, December 6, Arteta's Arsenal have won five matches on the bounce in all competitions, even if they had not scored from open play in three games before the 2-1 win at home to Brighton.

Ollie Watkins two second half goals were enough to saw off the challenge of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge during their 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. The triumph opened up a 10-point gap on themselves and the fourth-placed Blues.

Arsenal (33) are the second top scorers in the league but striker Viktor Gyokeres is the only player to reach five goals.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa team news

Arsenal team news:

Arteta was forced to play Declan Rice at right-back during the win over Brighton after Jurrien Timber missed the game through a muscular issue while Riccardo Calafiori suffered an injury during the warm-up.

The good news is that influential centre-back Gabriel returned during the victory over Albion to once again play alongside his defensive partner William Saliba, who was also injured earlier in the season.

However, the return dates of defenders Cristhian Mosquera, Timber and Calafiori are unknown.

Aston Villa team news

If Villa are to move level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table, they will need to set a new club record for consecutive wins.

However, they will have to do so without two key men.

Defender Matty Cash, and midfielder Boubacar Kamara will miss the crunch clash through suspension after picking up their fifth yellow cards of the campaign during their comeback victory at Chelsea last time out.

What the managers say:

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on if he is worried about Viktor Gyokeres' run of seven games without scoring from open play: "Yeah, because we want him to score. "Obviously, he had a few chances [against Brighton], a few great positions, the ball didn't arrive, so...keep insisting, it's the only way."
