Online Ed: Arsenal’s largely unmotivated players defeated at home

It Is Actually Getting Worse

Credit to Ostersunds for last night’s performance. It was a delight to see a committed team playing some decent football wanting to give their supporters something to cheer about. If only the same could be said of Arsene Wenger’s players.

The lack of motivation and basic organisation in the team was alarming to witness. The manager wrote in his programme notes about focus and professionalism. There were few signs of this last night. It feels as if the players turn it on when they feel like it and effectively down tools when they don’t. A recipe for consistency it isn’t. The defending for both of Ostersunds’ goals was poor in the extreme. Players not tight enough to their opponents or beaten too easily.

Fortunately, the three goal lead (and the saved Ostersunds penalty) from a week previous meant there was enough of a buffer. When Arsenal managed to find the net early in the second half it eased the tension somewhat. The visitors certainly didn’t give up and came very close to scoring a third, which would have really set the nerves jangling amongst the 30,000 home fans who bothered to turn up on a chilly February evening.

The amount of apathy surrounding the club currently – reflected on the pitch last night – is concerning. The sale of cup final tickets for Sunday almost went to red members, such was the lack of take up.

At the end of the ninety minutes, it was a case of job done over the two legs. But in both games, defensively, Arsenal showed very little to justify their being the second favourites to win this competition. To reach the final, they must play a further six games. Can you really believe that in one of those there will not be a defensive collapse that sees them concede three and make winning a two-legged tie almost impossible?

Certain of the players that started last night may not be certain of starting at Wembley on Sunday – Elneny, Maitland-Niles, Iwobi, Welbeck, possibly even Wilshere (given some of the strange team selections we have seen at Wembley in years gone by from the manager). Chances are at least three of them will be required, yet realistically, none of them played with much quality against Ostersunds.

Of course, they might raise their game for the final – it’s happened before, but consistency is a hallmark of greatness. When did Arsenal last have a prolonged period of solid performances and results?

I actually enjoyed watching Osterdsunds make a game of it, and unfortunately found Arsenal’s ineptitude equally entertaining. Because I’ve stopped caring until we finally see something fresh. I know that the club is operating with the manager’s proverbial handbrake on until he is ushered out of the door. Let’s hope that finally happens this summer, and if he can point to a piece of silverware in his final season, then I’m down with that. But Arsenal’s biggest trophy at the end of the current season will be to make a change in the dugout, because last night’s pathetic display is not one I wish to see the likes of again. The team is supposed to struggle away from home. But at ‘Fortress Emirates’? Against a club that did not even exist when Wenger got his feet under the desk at Highbury? Arsene will blame petrodollars if City win at Wembley. No such excuse last night.

In case you have missed it, the campaign to keep The Gooner going beyond the end of the current season was launched last month. Please check it out if you did not see it then.

Can I make a plea to the Gooner Ed that we keep the thread “it’s actually getting worse” as a permanent thread on the site. Just a thought ..... it’s actually getting worse!

Paul Ward, good shout, we'd have still seen the gaps in the ground at Highbury, yes this is why we left it, a new low alright, not forgetting another embarrassment, and the AKB wengerites kept telling us be careful what you wish for lol, you couldn't make it up. Whatever the outcome what ever the score TOF out the door.

Toad - sure we got through a brilliant tactical defeat by the night Wengo! Gloss over a team who Fulham might expect to beat over 2 legs . You still have the odd loon who thinks nothings wrong . Sadly for you , looks like forces are mounting the deluded lizard is being briefed against by internal sources within Arsenal and various media sources often with differing views are also reporting the same thing . BTW what is this new posting style you are trying to beguile us with? It’s how you started off making out you were a Corbyn Supporter. Within a few weeks you were being vile about the Irish . We know what your about !

After Wenger has gone we will surely look back on this as a low point, although losing 5 or 6 nil in a cup final would probably trump it.Getting beat at home by a team nobody had even heard of until last month in front of 20 odd thousand people on a Thursday night . Utterly depressing for anyone who genuinely wants the best for the club.Is this what we left Highbury for?Is this why Wenger was given a new contract ? A long and winding road to nowhere.

I see the old fraud is rambling on about great menteell strength and speeritt again ahead of tomorrow, who the fook is he trying to kid, no need to answer that. You know what would have won us the cup tomorrow, and had everybody behind the team and united singing from the same hymn sheet ? (players included)not wengers bullshyte menteel strength, and speeritt, spin and lies, but if he'd have resigned on Thursday Friday, or this morning. Regardless of the outcome wenger out.

Did you see the hand rubbing, ringing, arms folding over and over again the old fraud was doing as he rocked back and forth expecting the worse, (and fooking clueless to do anything about it) certainly some kind of break down happening or has happened, serious behavioural problems. I'd love to know what an expert has to say, and to think we used to laugh at, and take the piss of redknapps twitching. wenger out.

Nark/scruff, Cornish et all... Paint the masterpiece for all that you feel the need to but we are through to the next round and Ostersund aren't. Is that not the whole meaning of a cup competition... To progress further than your opponent. Let's feel sorry for em eh.

TOOAW (but why do I bother), actually they did beat us last night & at "Fortress Emirates". We are among the top spenders in both transfer fees & wages but are clearly treading water as a club - ergo the problem is undeniably Arthur W. It's totally pointless to argue otherwise unless one is totally deluded & seduced by a supreme master of the art of Spin & self promotion. This is an ongoing tragedy for both AFC & the man himself - who has succeeded in wrecking his own reputation.

Toad be a man for once in your life, face up to your denials and insecurities . Arsenal were outplayed , out gunned and beaten at home. A further nail in the coffin of the desperate last ragtag band of Wenger Boys. Young Josh won’t like that at all. Once again all of Wenger’s mediocrity laid bare in Europe. No doubt you and the 83 year old Brian Badarse will describe as a brilliant tactical defeat

You speak much sense. I really don't think that it's the footballer's fault you know. I remember going to the Diamond Club once or twice (where everyone including the men moisturise)and being stared at ( and not in a nice way) by D Fiszman esq ( RIP) for wearing a nice new 1971 red shirt. They live in a different world and as someone said above, the proles in the stadium do not matter. The problem for these creatures is that when the massed ranks of Asia realise that they have better things to spend money on than watching dull dull dull dull premiership football, only the proles will be left. I want the money to go away, and it will. It spoils everything. At least HMRC get 40% of the money the clubs waste. That's the only positive that I can see. BUT we have more than enough money to make a good side that could compete if we only had a coach worth the name.

Alsace - I d like to have seen Keane view. Hes always good for some decent TV. Hoddle is AWs long time friend and as such he rarely speaks as he must surely think about Wenger related matters. I think Keave despairs of most footballers these days to be honest and the way the game has gone. Hes right to do so but i think its stopped him from becoming a top Coach. He expects older attitudes and approaches of and from players. Hes like the rest now and says his bit and takes the money that TV splash out on pundits as if hes resigned to it. Cant blame him. On losing. Im like Tony. I sort of like them still to win but dont care a jot when we lose as its right what you say, its a means to an end. Its easy to be this way for me though seeing as i never pay to go to any games these days. Match goers obviously feel different as they spend their hard earned on them (for some reason that i cant really fathom at the moment with things as they are).

Rotten to the core and the wa#k yank will not give up this cash cow. Club will never be any better even with the zip fiddler gone!! The board needs to go, what we once supported will never be the same and it is to far gone now to save. Between them they have destroyed every bit of tradition that this once proud club stood for. Couple more years and it will probably be moved to the USA. Thanks Mr Hillwood, Mr Dein, Lady Bracewell and all you other cu#ts that sold us down the river.

Yes, it's Ron - I only live to amuse you so my weekend is complete. Man From Uncle and Tony Evans, nothing else matters but getting rid. We can never enjoy ourselves until he goes. Our enemies Mr Roy Keane and Lord Glenda of Hoddle sat there last night bemused bewildered and sympathetic towards us due to the total lack of anything resembling backbone in defence. That's why I want us to lose every game that it takes to hack the leech off our teams' emaciated body. It's not because I enjoy us losing, it's a means to an end.

  20. TonyEvans

    Feb 23, 2018, 15:50 #107322

Man from Uncle - I am with you on that front. I don't want us to lose on Sunday, but more tellingly I won't really care very much if we do. Wenger has reduced many former diehards to this level of apathy. I don't think losing a cup final will make one jot of difference as to when Wenger leaves, so I say get whatever level of enjoyment you still can from the day.

It was interesting that Alan Smith confirmed what we all suspected that Bould has little to do with the defensive coaching and Wenger takes a lot of the sessions. It is amazing that an asset such as Bould schooled in the GG way of defending is not used because of the ego of an out of touch manager. The evidence of Wengers influence was for all to see last night.I don't think Wenger has even read the Ladybird book of defending.

Of course it's getting worse Kev, and with respect are you only realising that now, I doubt very much you are of course, (this team club are at one of it's lowest ebs in it's proud history if not the lowest) but no doubt there are still those who are, and indeed still think nothings wrong, it's only a blip that's lasting thirteen years, LOL, Sad, and it's all because of an old arrogant fraud of a manager who has been deteriorating weekly for years now with his wengerite luvvies just waiting for him and the club to take their last breath with out a f*****g care in the world for the club. I can't believe anyone, least of all you Kevin, wants us to get a result on Sunday. Cup wins are the figleaves that Wenger heavily oils and stretches over his naked manparts at contract renewal time. That anyone is excited about the prospect of winning the League Cup is also a mystery. These are the dog days of Wenger's infamous reign as the dictator of Ashburton Grove. They should not be garlanded with one last hurrah but with the disgrace that he has made is all feel when our team is mentioned. I had tickets for but did not attend the latest in a long line of humiliations at the hands of teams and coaches who have read the Ladybird book of football, and play to it. The chorus of people who have worked more than one day in football and who think Wenger must go, is apparently being joined by the kit manufacturers. If this is true then it will threaten to affect Mr Kroenke's stack of valuable money. Will he let the board deliver the drear news or will he, as before save that very special pleasure for himself?

MAF - Nail on the head. Its a laugh. AFC is there to be laughed at. They dont care. Theyre getting rich on it.Absolutely. its supposed to be a laugh. As Shakespeare said in As you like it - 'all of the worlds a theatre' and everybody plays a part in it. The PL is one of the main sporting theatres now and all in it have a part and play it out, sucking out the enormous rewards from the same gravy train. I think they laugh back at the fans to be honest as they stand back and wonder why fans bother going to see the games, most of which are very average. Its right to ask at Exeter says, what do we support? Who knows, but what we do know is that AFC dont need fans. They could function with an empty stadium as could all of the so called self proclaimed 'top 6'. Its harsh but in truth any ordinary person paying money to go to Arsenal now is a bit of a fool and gets what they deserve from it. Last night is a stark reminder that laughing at Arsenal now is the best part of it.

Last night's attendance according to my paper 58,406, (i kid you not) something very Orwellian about the modern Arsenal set up. I read before hand how Wenger had seen signs of Welbeck being able to lead the line. I just keep thinking of a cow arse and a banjo, great fun though.

i suppose if there is any type of 'justification' for lat nights feeble offering it was perhaps played out under instruction to only do what was required and not to risk injury etc with Sundays game in mind. The problem seems to be that the team took that type of instruction too literally and nearly slipped up. I sense that they ll dredge up some urgency and interest on Sunday. If they dont, they ll be panned out of sight.

Last night was the apotheosis of alienation for me. Playing in a blue kit in a stadium with the same name as an Arabian airline, with players who can't be bothered to put in a performance for the paying 'customers' and a manager who can't motivate them to do so, and isn't too bothered himself. Where is 'Arsenal' in all of that? What are we supposed to be actually supporting?

In the first half Arsenal had a corner. We took it short, and five passes later, it was passed back to Ospina, without an opposition player getting a touch. How on earth, can any team, turn an attacking corner into a pass back to their own keeper? It's very clear that the Manager, the players, the coaching staff, and probably the whole set up is rotten. Only when Mr Wenger goes will we be able to assess just how far we have really fallen, and the size of the task required to get us back to anything like challenging for EPL or even a top 4 place, again.

Motivation and organisation are two words that Wenger has air-brushed out of Arsenal's DNA. The players put in a performance now and again, when they feel up for it, and Wenger is like some sort of second rate film director that thinks he is an Oscar winner, but in reality is only good for a Golden Raspberry! Sunday, we should see a different Arsenal, the one that actually turns up - whether that will be good enough v City is anyone's guess, but (as someone else said) I am glad it is Man City and not Bristol City, otherwise another humiliation would certainly be on the cards with this lot and this footballing clot of a manager. Not that a humiliation would unduly bother me now anyway.

    Feb 23, 2018, 10:48 #107299

If Ostersunds hadn't been intimidated that first half hour at their place they'd have gone through. As soon as they realised they weren't playing a proper team they had the better of it. They play when they want at Arsene FC. It's got to the stage now where the star player doesn't even have to turn up if he doesn't feel like it. But as far as Wenger's concerned he prepared the team properly, they didn't respond, nothing to do with him, shrugs his shoulders and 'we focus on the next game'. No consequences for anyone. Such is the culture of the club.

Well credit to Wenger, we haven't been humiliated for a couple of weeks since the pathetic surrender vs the scum. It's so kind of him to ensure I will be ridiculed all day at work once again. This latest embarrassment just reiterates that the old fraud has completely lost the players. They are so clearly in the comfort zone, happy to pick up their over inflated and undeserved salaries whilst clearly not giving a s*** . The club is a laughing stock and has been for years, yet the architect of our downfall is rewarded with an obscene salary and contract extensions. It's a disgrace. We are in a cup final on Sunday and yet many of us long standing fans would rather see us lose if it means the end of this parasite. Wenger out

We were 'complacent' according to the manager - as if it's nothing to do with him! Seems there is no moral conscience at Arsenal to expect supporters to pay to watch what amounts to the second team put in an unmotivated performance.
