Two Arsenal Women players were in action on the opening day of Euro 2025, with Lia Walti and Frida Maanum facing each other in hosts Switzerland’s 2-1 defeat to Norway.
Swiss captain Walti led her side out in front of over 36,000 fans at St. Jakob Park in Basel, having overcome some injury worries in time for the start of the tournament.
Nadine Riesen’s goal sparked jubilant celebrations from the home fans as Switzerland earned a deserved first half lead, but Ada Hegerberg equalised for Norway before a Swiss own goal four minutes later.
Maanum started in an unfamiliar role on the right wing for Gemma Grainger’s Norway, and was replaced by Manchester United’s Celin Bizet with 14 minutes remaining.
Elsewhere in Group A, Finland beat ten-player Iceland 1-0 in the tournament opener.
Wonderful to see Lia Walti lead out Switzerland in front of a home crowd for their Euro 2025 opener- a player who so often goes under the radar and has had to battle some injuries in the build-up to this tournament. She’ll have her work cut out against this Norway side though!
