Prologue

The Champions of Europea continue their defence of the Women's Champions League title they won in such thrilling fashion back in May.

En route to that never-to-be-forgotten final in Lisbon where they defeated a star-studded Barcelona side, Renee Slegers team beat Real Madrid in the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate. The Gunners overturning a 2-0 deficit in the Spainish capital by winning the second leg at the Emirates 3-0.

However, Slegers' side have stumbled in their defence, after an excellent OL Lyonnes side beat them at Meadow Park in their first game, prior to Arsenal winning away at Benfica.

Arsenal appeared to be coasting in Bavaria, with a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval against Bayern Munich, but the Germans staged a remarkable comeback to win 3-2 at the Allianz Arena.

To underline their inconsistency during this campaign so far,  the Gunners were held to a goalless draw in the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road last weekend. (See Suzy Lycett's Ten of the Best photos from the clash here)

With Arsenal eleventh in the UWCL table - whopping eight points behind WSL leaders Manchester City - a win against Real will certainly go a long way to calm fears over an early Euro exit, but given the perplexingly stuttering peformances from such a talented side, victory against the Spainards is certainly not a given.

Mariona Caldentey speaks to the Gooner Fanzine's Izzy Gilligan

Ahead of the clash, Mariona Caldentey spoke to the Gooner's Izzy Gillligan, saying: “It’s hard. I think we get really emotional with these games, and when things don’t go your way, it’s hard.

“But we play every three, four days, so we don’t really have time to think about what happened in the past.

“Now we play at Borehamwood against Real Madrid, the Champions League game, and then we have international break, so we are really looking forward to that.

“I think we are motivated enough to win that game to show again what football we want to play and what football we can play.

“So, I think these games you don’t need nothing extra or nothing different, it’s a really exciting game."
