Prologue

Paris in the spring is normally a beuatiful sight, but for all Arsenal supporters it was a cruel mistress, as Mikel Arteta's valiant Gunners crashed out 2-1 (3-1 on agg) at the hands of billionaire moneybags Paris Saint Germain on a momentous evening in the French capital.

For many the defeat still rankles because, quite simply, Arsenal could and should have been 3-0 up in the first 20 minutes of that fateful semi-final secong leg at the atmospheric Parc de Princes.

Gianluiugi Donnarumma proving a redoubtable presence in the PSG to keep out Gabi Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard's firece efforts, following on from Delan Rice's early header flying agonisingly wide, as the Gunners started in swashbuckling fashion.

Alas, amid the incessant noise and theatre from numerous Tifo and pyro displays in such a Parisian cauldron, Arsenal couldn't maintain such a thrilling opening.

Georgia's beguiling tricky wideman Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hit the post, with Bradley Barcola drawing an excellent save from David Raya, prior to Fabian Ruiz breaking the deadlock.

Despite David Raya's heroics in saving a penalty from Vitinha  Achraf Hakimi doubled the home side's lead on 72 minutes, to sink Gunners hopes, with Bukayo Saka goal 240 seconds later only being a late, not so consolation.

In fairness Arteta could not have asked for more from his valiant side, against the eventual winners - who during their run essentially 'completed' English football, by beating Manchester City in the league phase, before eliminating Liverpool, Aston Villa and then Arsenal in the knockout rounds.

For good measure, how we all laughed when a barely fit PSG side, after spending the summer on the beach following reaching the semi-final of the World Club Cup competition in the USD, turned up for the Super Cup in flip flops, their Duty Free purchases still unpacked, to beat Spurs on penalties in Udinese earlier this month.

The fact Thomas Frank's Lilywhites lived up to their nickname by throwing away a two goal lead on 85 minutes, while also fialing to win at 2-0 in the spot kick shootout, only added to the schadenfruede.

....

The Gunners reached the last four without a recognised striker, easing past PSV 9-3 on aggregate including a rollocking 7-1 rout at the Phillips Stadion during Eindhoven's annual carnival.

That was before posting two results for the ages against the mighty Real Madrid, the stunning 3-0 victory over Carlo Ancelotti's fading side in the first leg in North London surely being the most memorable match in the Emirates 19 year history. Followed up by a comprehensive 2-1 win in the Bernabeu for an improbable 5-1 aggregate victory to make Arsenal the only team Real have failed to beat in four matches or more in their storied European history.

Imagine how Arsenal will fayre with a striker, and a new improved squad this season.

Not to mention the enticing prospect of anticipating at least four European trips this autumn and winter.

We can't wait.
