Yes, it was 'only' the Arsenal U21s side. And yes, it was only against Swansea City's U21 side. But the long-awaited appearance of a talented attacker at Meadow Park on Wednesday evening not only brought succour to supporters watching on, but could also be the key to ending the hunt for further attacking additions to the first team squad.

With Edu and Mikel Arteta already bringning in five players to boost the first team - including the hugely impressive Gabriel Jesus and Alexansandr Zinchenko from Manchester City - it could be argued the club is well stocked for the 2022-23 campaign.

With two wins out of two, the Gunners have lit up their campaign so far. Yet, with Edu and Arteta still on the hunt for further additions, the appearance of the exciting £34m Fabio Vieiria at Boreham Wood last night could be a factor in the North Londoners deciding not to get the chequebook out again before August is out.

While the former Porto player played with the No7 on his back - displaying flair, vision and creativity during his heartening 45 minute cameo against the young Welsh side - it was his tacticial versatility that also caught the eye.

During his time at the Estadio Dragao Vieira played left wing, right wing, No10, No8, No6, as a False Nine and even briefly featured as a left back on one occasion. With the 22-year-old missing Arsenal's pre-season campaign thanks to an unfortunate foot fracture on international duty we are still unsure of where Arteta believes his best position to be.

Arsenal boss Arteta was at Meadow Park on Wednesday evening to run the rule over the return of Emile Smith Rowe - as well as to observe Vieira easing back to full fitness.

And during an intriguing opening 45 minutes the Gooner witnessed the talented Portuguese attacker start as a right winger.  At times Vieira dovetailed well with compatriot and captain for the night Cedric Soares (whose excellent free-kick won the game), while on other occasions he tucked inside, effectively swapping the No8 role with Smith Rowe. It was a fascinating 45 minutes before Vieira and Smith Rowe were hooked, presumably on the orders of Arteta, who had seen enough.

Whether Vieira's cameo proved to be enough to sate Arteta's demands for further additions at the end of this transfer window remains to be seen - but on last night's showing Arsenal don't need reputed right-sided transfer targets such as Cody Gakpo, Callum Hudson-Odoi or Yeremy Pino - becuase the club is already well-stocked with such talents in the form of the exciting Vieria.
